Return Policy

The Leitchfield Animal Shelter is NOT required to take back any returned pet unless space is available and reasoning is classified as acceptable by the Leitchfield Animal Shelter.

  • Puppies That Were Adopted While Under 3 Months of Age -
Are NOT eligible for return due to their critical socialization period. They need consistent handling and bonding to develop properly. Puppies under 3 months of age adopted, are the adopters responsibility to socialize and train accordingly. Any behavioral concerns that have been developed under the adopters care, is not considered eligibility for returns.
  • Dogs Adopted for More Than 3 Months -
Are NOT eligible for return as they have bonded and adjusted to their home. Three months is considered sufficient time to determine fit.

  •  We understand that life circumstances can change. Regardless of the policies above, if you are unable to keep your pet, please contact The Leitchfield Animal Shelter to discuss rehoming support. The well-being of the animal is our top priority, and we will work with you on the next steps. Keep in mind, LAS is not required to accept returns; However, eligible returns are top priority. Adopted pets that have not yet been altered are eligible for returns, adopters must not rehome an adopted pet if they are NOT spayed/neutered at the time due to age/size.

Continued Vet Care

When adopting, adopters are required to keep their adopted pet up-to-date on vaccinations, parasite preventatives, along with other routine vet care services to insure comfort and disease prevention!

Did You Know: Heartworms are very common in the Southern States, Heartworm Prevention is very important as the parasite itself is deadly and very expensive to treat. Please consult your veterinarian for the best treatment options for your pet!
