The first step for adopting is submitting an adoption application. We want to get to know you and help you find the perfect pet for you! This is a requirement for adopting any pet from us.

To finalize the adoption process, filling out paperwork is a requirement to transfer ownership from us to you! This includes an adoption contract. You can find our contract at the bottom of this page for reference!

Spay/Neuter, Up-To-Date Distemper-Parvo Vaccines, Rabies Vaccine, Heartworm Tests (for 6 months and older canines), Up-To-Date Heartworm Prevention and Flea & Tick, Deworming, and a Microchip.

Adoption Requirements

Spay/Neuter

If you adopt a pet that is too small or young for their spay/neuter at the time of adoption, you are required to bring them back in the future for their spay/neuter surgery. The pet will get their Rabies Vaccination when they are spayed/neutered! 

Return Policy

All pets adopted through the Leitchfield Animal Shelter are required to be returned if the adopter wishes to rehome said pet. The pet will be put back up for adoption immediately. All paperwork that was received during the time of the adoption will need to be returned with the pet.  We understand that things happen, we strive to make sure that each pet is rehomed in the best way possible. 

Continued Vet Care

When adopting, adopters are required to keep their adopted pet up-to-date on vaccinations, parasite preventatives, along with other routine vet care services to insure comfort and disease prevention! 


Did You Know: Heartworms are very common in the Southern States, Heartworm Prevention is very important as the parasite itself is deadly and very expensive to treat. Please consult your veterinarian for the best treatment options for your pet!
